Wood-engraved frontispiece. A translation of the anonymous French text LE COMTE D'ESSEX HISTOIRE ANGLOISE, printed in Paris in 1678, and first published in English in 1680. (London), The Land Press, (1988). First Edition. Hardcover. Quarto (8-1/2" x 11-3/4") bound by Constance K. Wozny in a striking full black morocco leather art binding with onlays depicting a poppy weeping seeds of tears, tan morocco pastedowns, and marbled endpapers. Illustrated with 11 collotype illustrations from contemporary Civil War photographs by Alexander Gardner, Timothy O'Sullivan, and others from the Library of Congress collection chosen to illustrate the mood of the scenes described in the book. One of the illustrations is bound in at the beginning of the text; the other ten are loose in a glassine envelope. Copy #94 of 140 printed by Gwasg Gregynog, SIGNED by the binder and dated 2011 on the colophon page. The Land Press published this edition of Crane's classic in a choice of five bindings designed by Denise Lubbett, Angela James, Romilly Saumarez Smith, and Jen Lindsay. This appears to have been an unbound copy that was privately bound at a later date (2011) by Wozny, a member of the Guild of Book Workers and the Hand Bookbinders of California. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell box. Fine in a close to Fine clamshell box with a minor bump at the bottom corners .

Though not numbered on the spines, these appear to be from a 12-volume set and includes NATURE, ADDRESS AND LECTURES, ESSAYS I: FIRST SERIES, ESSAYS II: SECOND SERIES, REPRESENTATIVE MEN, ENGLISH TRAITS, SOCIETY AND SOLITUDE, LETTERS AND SOCIAL AIMS, LECTURES AND BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES, MISCELLANIES, and NATURAL HISTORY OF INTELLECT. Lacking are CONDUCT OF LIFE and POEMS. One volume has the date of 1900 on the title page, and most have 1880s dates on the copyright pages. A nearly complete set of Emerson's writings which, without numbers on the spines, passes as complete in appearance. Minor rubbing and wear. Near Fine and with a charming look on the shelf .

Cuzin in full mustard morocco leather, the boards with leather inlays of lily pads, flowers, and butterflies; gilt dentelles; marbled endpapers; all edges gilt. Of a total of 350 copies, this is #31 of 80 printed on "papier du Japan ou grand velin d'Arches," with lovely color illustrations by Henri Caruchet interleaved with an additional suite of the illustrations on chine before letters. Gautier's translation of THE WATER PAVILION from Chinese to French in 1846 was, while not the first, one of the earliest. Armorial bookplate of Mexborough on the front pastedown. A few scuffs to the spine and edges. Near Fine Gautier wrote plays, poetry, novels, short stories, and theater criticism. His most famous work is MADEMOISELLE DE MAUPIN, an historical romance based on the life of French opera star Mlle Maupin, who was a first-rate swordswoman and often went about disguised as a man. Another well-known work is his short story "La Morte Amoureuse," the story of a priest who falls in love with a beautiful woman who turns out to be a vampire.
